Australia Zoo

July 20, 2016
2020 saw the loss of 1 billion of Australia's wildlife including the koala

We have a guest from the UK staying with us at the moment and on Wednesday a week ago we took her to Australia Zoo (only about an hour north of us).  It was the first time I have ever been there (sad but true).

My daughter’s friend from high school works at Australia Zoo (dream job and totally in line with her ‘Zoology’ university studies) and was one of the presenters in the show at the Crocoseum.  She also met us after the show and had arranged for us to have a ‘private experience’ with Mack the Koala.  Basically she brought Mack out for us each to have a nice long cuddle with.  Mack was incredibly snuggly!  I’m pretty sure he and I have bonded for life.  I so easily could have snuck him home with me!

Anyway it was a fabulous day!  Here’s a tip for you:  if you go to Australia Zoo make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes.  It is huge and there is a lot of walking to be done!

Here are some photo’s of some of the animals and birds encountered on the day.

You got some really great shots. I’m glad you said it was a tuna iceblock as I thought it was a wooden hammer…and thought it looked mean!

Thanks Lydia. LOL oh that’s funny – a wooden hammer would indeed be mean! No he was like a happy little kitten licking away on his tuna iceblock.

Glad you enjoyed the photo’s Steph! The macaws are gorgeous aren’t they?! They were over on ‘Bindi’s Island’ on the walkway up to her ‘treehouse’. πŸ™‚

Thank you Trish! I adore that Kookaburra and the tiger was gorgeous too. First time for me at Australia Zoo. I read today that they are extending to include an overnight experience. That sounds like fun! πŸ™‚

Pretty much all those shots are my favourite – but I do love the one with the two birds perched together. Gorgeous photography Min!

Thanks Raychael! First time there for me and yes it’s a great family day out. Good for winter – it’d be too hot for me in summer (but that is me)! πŸ˜‰

Fantastic photos! I haven’t been there for many years – it was quite small and unimpressive when I last went.

Thanks Vanessa – you will be very surprised when/if you go again. It is huge now! I read today that they are going to be extending to include an overnight experience. Now that sounds like fun! πŸ™‚

The Kookaburra is really cute, the Tiger is a bit intimidating and the Macaw is so pretty. The colours!

Thanks Di! I adore Kookaburra’s and those Macaw are beautiful! The tiger seemed like a pussy cat but I did have very thick glass between him and I πŸ™‚

Love your photos. The cheetah is amazing. I thought the tuna icypole was odd, but it’s a big cat. What cat wouldn’t love tuna? πŸ™‚

I couldn’t believe how tame that cheetah was – though they would always have to be on guard! Those cats are fast! He was loving that tuna iceblock! πŸ™‚
