May – the month of birthdays!

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday

May is always a busy month of birthdays around here. I think I’ve written about this fact many times on the blog but this year I’m feeling more reflective than previous years.

May 1 – was my father-in-law’s birthday (deceased now) and is my niece’s birthday (she’s the tennis players brother’s daughter who lives overseas and I haven’t seen in many years)

May 3 – is my Mother’s birthday. As she has deteriorated a lot over recent times and we don’t know what the future holds, this birthday was a very special one. She turned 83. We celebrated last Friday going in to her aged care facility with cake for morning tea. She had lots of cards and gifts and was made feel very special and loved.

May 3 – is also my daughter’s birthday (she and Mum share a birthday which I wrote about a few years ago) and this year is her final one in her 20’s. How can that be? She and her boyfriend went out to dinner on the actual evening of her birthday but they came to us for dinner on Sunday and I did a big roast pork dinner with all the trimmings and birthday cake of course.

May 15 – is my sister-in-law’s birthday (the tennis player’s younger sister)

May 17 – is my niece’s birthday (my brother-in-law’s daughter)

May 20 – is the tennis player’s birthday

May 31 – is my birthday and it is my 60th this year (eek!) – a milestone birthday.

Island hammock

For my birthday this year I will not be here. Quite a while ago we booked a one week holiday to Fiji. At this point in time we can only go away for short holidays. I wanted my 60th to be something special to remember and I wanted to go somewhere I’d never been before. We are going to an island resort (I’ll reveal where upon my return) and the holiday package includes a lot of great activities. Hoping I’ll still find some time for laying around in a hammock and reading books though! One of the activities includes visiting a local village and I plan to take some gifts to give the children (yet to buy!). I’m thinking school supply stuff like crayons or felt pens, pencils, erasers etc and maybe something fun like a little bubble blowing kit perhaps. This is what I recall from my research many months ago!

Also for my birthday I’ll be meeting up with my childhood friend Katie. We were neighbours and our mother’s were good friends. They were pregnant with us at the same time and had us one month apart. Katie and her husband and myself and the tennis player are meeting up for dinner this coming weekend (half way between both our birthdays) to celebrate our 60th’s. I haven’t seen her in ages so am very much looking forward to this! You can read about Katie in this blog post I wrote about how I got my nickname of Min. Note that I referred to her as Kiki in that post as I was trying to protect her identity because she didn’t know I was writing the post at the time. I don’t know why I bothered because using her name of Katie still doesn’t give away her identity!! By the way – most people call her Kate nowadays but she will always be Katie to me!

How do I feel about turning 60?

Well first of all I do have to admit it’s a bit of a shock that I am this age! In my mind I’m somewhere mid-30’s! However, there’s nothing we can do about aging is there? It happens to us all (if we’re lucky) regardless of sex, nationality, or status in society. There’s no stopping the clock! So, the best attitude to have is one of gratitude. I’m very grateful I’ve made it to 60. I’m very grateful I am reasonably healthy. I’m very grateful I can still walk, talk, enjoy food, and do most of the things that I want to do.

Who will look after #WWWhimsy while I’m away?

I asked Sue Loncaric of Women Living Well After 50 and Debbie Harris of Deb’s World if they’d mind looking after #WWWhimsy again for me and they very kindly said yes. I can’t thank them enough. The next option was to put a call out to see if anyone else would like to host, or I’d ‘rest’ #WWWhimsy for couple of weeks. Deb and Sue have done this gig before so know what to do and so I’m very grateful that they are happy to help out again. Thank you to both of you!

IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE with regards to #WWWhimsy

In about 3 weeks – on Wednesday 29 May and next on Wednesday 5 June #WWWhimsy will be hosted by Sue and Deb at the blog links in the paragraph above.

There will be no blog posts published here at Write of the Middle on those days because I will be swanning around Fiji snorkelling and basket weaving and luxuriating in a hammock (I hope) for the first date and newly returned home unpacking and catching up on washing and visiting Mum and all the housey things for the second date.

I will return to hosting #WWWhimsy on Wednesday 12 June.

Have you been to Fiji before? Did you love it? Tell me all the good stuff so I can start to get excited.

Ciao for now,

Isnt it interesting that some months are like May for you!
January is for us. 3 birthdays (one was Dad’s) and our Wedding Anniversary.

I am so glad to read of your planned special holiday and in true Min style you are already relishing the experiecnes to come and planning to enjoy and embrace it all.

We are fortunate to have good blogging friends like Sue and Debbie who offer to help out.

My late Aunt’s birthday was 31 May…a special memory for me too.

Thank you for the link up.

Hi Denyse, yes I want to be free to soak up the 7 day experience in Fiji. I need to soak it up to help sustain me when I return. I’ve learnt from prior experience not to put any blogging or art expectations on myself while I’m away. I want to be free to be present and experience all that the holiday will offer. I am so grateful to Sue and Debbie. It’s a big ask. As you know, it’s not just providing the place for people to link up, it’s about engagement too – reading and responding to all posts that link up and replying to comments on the hosts posts etc I think I remember you mentioning that your Aunt’s birthday was 31 May too. She must’ve been a lovely person! lol xo

Hi Min, April and May are our months for birthdays. My daughter and one grandson in April and then Mike and my other grandson in May. How lovely to be going to Fiji and I bet you can’t wait. We had a few days at Stanthorpe last week and have booked a trip to Cairns for the end of July. I can tell you, Min that my 60s have been my best decade and I’ll be 67 in August so I’m over half way through the 60s. I certainly don’t feel it! I’m honoured to cohost #WWWhimsy for you with Deb and glad to help out. xx

Hi Sue, so a couple of birthdays in your family in May too! I’m finally starting to get a little bit excited about Fiji but I don’t usually really get excited until I’m on the plane! The organisation required in the lead up is a bit stressful but worth it once you’re on your way. I saw your posts when you were away in Stanthorpe. I love that area and in fact we’re going there for a few days in July for a little winter getaway. One of our sons is going to come with us which will be really nice. Cairns in July will be great – probably perfect weather then! It’s so good to hear you say that your 60’s have been your best decade. I hope I’ll be able to say the same! Huge big thanks to you and Deb for agreeing to host #WWWhimsy while I’m away. It’s the biggest help to me to know it’s in good hands and I don’t need to worry. Thank you!! xo

Hi Min, lots of fun birthdays in May and a fabulous trip to Fiji to celebrate turning 60. We had my youngest daughter’s wedding in a resort in Fiji. There were only a handful of us (they were initially going to elope) so it was a week of family fun with my other two daughters there one came from England and met us there so it was fabulous to have all my family together to celebrate. The people are lovely and so helpful, you’ll love it and will be able to relax I’m sure.
Thanks for trusting Sue and I again with the linkup, we are always happy to help out!
    Have a great week.

Hi Debbie, I bet your youngest daughter’s wedding was beautiful and yes I’ve heard the Fijian people are very warm and happy and lovely! I’ve been out today and bought some gifts to give the children when we visit the village. I can’t wait to meet them all and see their happy smiling faces! Thank you so much to you and Sue for once again helping out with #WWWhimsy – it means the world! Hope you have a great week too! xo

Hi Lydia – yes a busy month with all the birthdays and Mother’s Day! Can’t believe I’ll soon be 60. Hopefully Fiji will be a fun and restorative week away! There will be plenty of pics on my return – I am sure! lol

Your May is my Feb/March when all the birthdays are stacked together. I hope you have a fabulous time in Fiji. We stopped there on our way to Australia the first time, back in 1981, and enjoyed all of it. We went to a tiny little island for a few days and toured the main land on a local bus which was quite the adventure.

    • Reply Min May 9, 2024 at 5:15 pm

Hi Bernie, we all have that busy month or so of birthdays don’t we? 1981 was a while ago. I was 17 then! We’re going to an island resort. I don’t like to give away exactly where we are going for security reasons but I’ll share all about it when I return! xo

That is a lot of birthdays – our big birthday month is July. Me, David, Teddy, my best friend, my cousin all have birthdays in July as does my mum up in heaven. I can’t believe you’re going to be 60 – you are obviously drinking from the water bottle of eternal youth! I’ve never been to Fiji but everyone I know who has has had an amazing time. Hope you have the best time – you really deserve it!

    • Reply Min May 9, 2024 at 5:17 pm

Thanks Sammie – yes we all seem to have that big birthday month don’t we? I can’t believe I’m going to be 60 either! I wish there was a water bottle of eternal youth cos if there was I for sure would be drinking from it! lol I’ve always heard good things about Fiji too – particularly about how lovely the Fijian people are so I’m very much looking forward to meeting some of them! xo

Oh wow that is a busy month of birthdays! Fuji sounds fantastic; I’ve always wanted to go but we have yet to make it there. I hope you have the most wonderful time.

    • Reply Min May 9, 2024 at 5:19 pm

Hi Joanne – there sure are a lot of birthdays during May for us and Mother’s Day in there as well. Fiji has been on my bucket list for a long time. Just about everyone I know has been there … but me! So that will soon be rectified. Hopefully it’ll live up to expectations and be fun and restorative for me! xo

Yes April is a big birthday month for us as is September. Funny how that happens! It’s great to turn 60. As they say – the best is yet to come. May 31st was a birthday of a dear friend now deceased. Hope your trip is fabulous.

    • Reply Min May 9, 2024 at 5:20 pm

Hi Sherry – yes everyone has busy birthday months it seems. Good to hear some positivity about turning 60 – thank you! I’m so sorry about your friend. I’m sure she was wonderful with a birthday on that day – a Gemini like me! xo

My July is your May. Lots of July birthdays. And we try to be all together for most of them. Sounds like your sweet mum was well celebrated. We celebrated my mom’s 95th with her in Match and she was gone in August. I have been so thankful that my sister and I had that special time with her because it went downhill from there in a hurry. Glad you are making the most of these moments.

Enjoy, enjoy Fiji. I do a virtual reality aerobic workout called Supernatural and the workouts are set in scenic places like Fiji and Iceland and even in my own backyard of White Sands, New Mexico – just up the ‘street’ from me. Fiji looks like heaven on earth. Do all the things then take some time to hammock and read. Safe travels.

Hi Leslie, I don’t think we have one birthday in July. Isn’t it funny?! I bet you’re so glad you celebrated well with your Mum for her 95th. You never know what is around the corner which is why I am doing my utmost to care for my mother and be there for her through all of it. It’s hard but I would never desert her. The same with Dad. I was with him right to the end. I haven’t started getting excited about Fiji yet. There’s a lot to get done before we can go away … so I generally don’t get excited until I’m on the plane! I know I’ll love it once I’m there. I love discovering new places and cultures. xo
