On Sunday I returned from my first ever annual ProBlogger conference and it was amazing! The atmosphere was happy, inspiring, and motivational. The people were friendly and welcoming – Problogger staff, RACV Royal Pines Resort staff, speakers, bloggers and everyone else there! The food was plentiful and yummy. The venue was RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast and it was very impressive. I was treated like royalty on arrival. The staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. The room was comfortable and had a really lovely view. The facilities for the conference were outstanding – the conference rooms, the restaurants, the fall out areas, the grounds! Wow!
I have a lot of notes and information to process. My head is swirling with thoughts and ideas. The first thing I need to do is go through all my notes (and there are a lot of them) and compile an action list from them. Then I will need to prioritise that action list.
There is so much I want to share about my first #PBevent so there will be more than one blog post needed. To start with, while I’m still processing all the information and fabulous tips I learned over my 3.5 days, I thought I’d share some of my dorky moments. Strangely enough, my top 3 all relate to my lack of hotel room experience!
If you’re a regular visitor at Write of the Middle, you’d know that I haven’t travelled much (hence My Top 5 Travel Lessons Learned post when we recently travelled around Tasmania). Many, many years of my life has been spent working the corporate life to pay school fees and the mortgage with an annual beach holiday thrown in to help keep me sane. So, I’m not often in hotel rooms which you will soon see!
DORKY MOMENT #1
This happened on arrival in my room. I needed to go to the bathroom – urgently! I flicked the light switches on for the bathroom and nada, zilch, nothing happened. OMG – trust me to get the room where the light bulbs need changing! So I fumbled my way through the darkness to the toilet and tinkled in the dark. Whilst there it suddenly dawned on me. Ohhhh – maybe this is one of those rooms where you have to put your card (instead of a key) into a slot to make everything work? Doh! Yep – bingo! No light bulbs needed changing after all!!
DORKY MOMENT #2
First time using the shower. The shower was over a bath. I climbed into the bath and then proceeded to spend about 15 minutes trying to work out how to get water to come out of the shower head! I could not work it out! In frustration, I gave up and squatted down and began washing myself from the bath tap. Not the best scenario!! It was pure fluke that I finally worked out how to get water out of that shower head. Whilst the bath water was running, I stood up and pulled the little silver knob up higher and bang – got a face full of shower water! I had pulled that knob before but apparently you had to pull it whilst bath water was running and it then transferred that water to the shower head. Um … is this a normal shower/bath set up or would you struggle to work this out too?
DORKY MOMENT #3
Saturday morning and I decided to wash my hair. I’d been to the hairdresser on Tuesday to have my hair done and it was starting to feel a little limp! I decided that as I’d had Thursday and Friday with straight hair, I’d spend Saturday and Sunday with curly hair. So with my new shower mastery skills I showered and washed my hair. I dried it off with the hair dryer and then went off to make myself a cup of coffee. I then returned to the bathroom to do my last minute finessing with my much loved GHD (hair straightener). I turned it on and nothing happened. OMG of all times for my GHD to die! Hmmm … on the good side it meant I had a valid excuse to get a new, updated version. On the bad side it meant I was in a pickle and would not be able to finish my look how I wanted. In my mind I was already sending an SOS #PBevent tweet seeking the assistance of fellow female bloggers for the loan of a GHD ….. when I realised I hadn’t plugged it in. It was in fact the hair dryer that belonged to the black cord that WAS plugged in. Ooops!
How about you? Care to share any dorky moments from ProBlogger 2015 or from other years? Got any similar dorky hotel room moments to share?
Ciao for now,

Did EXACTLY the same thing with the lights. Do great to meet you at PB.
Glad I wasn’t the only one Robyna! Such a pleasure to meet you! 🙂 x
Hahaha, classic! I was surprised there was only one powerpoint in the bathroom. So frustrating! Also the beds were really short. I slept on the diagonal and my feet still hung over the edge. Everything else was brilliant – not trying to bag it – but sometimes the little things really get to you.
So great to meet you! x #teamIBOT
Emily – now that you’ve met me, you’d know that the beds being short was not a problem for me! LOL There was only one thing about the bed that bugged me and it was the pillows. They were too thick and made my neck hurt. First world problems! LOL It was so lovely to meet you! 🙂 xo
I was in a stranger’s house in America the first time I learnt the shower thing! We didn’t have a bath in our room, next year we will!
I have never come across a shower/bath set up like that ever before. I was completely dumbfounded! I’m amazed I eventually worked it out! LOL
HAHHAHAHHAHA Min, my total lack of travelling showed when I didn’t even know how to use that card to get into the room. Lucky that my roomie is an old pro. And she showed me the light trick too! Trust me, you’re not alone…
I was nervous I tell you!! SO nervous that I’d not do the card in the slot thing the right way and wouldn’t be able to get into my room and would have to get help like a moron! By some miracle, I got it first time and I was in! I was feeling so proud, so confident … for about 2 minutes … until the bathroom incident! lol 😉
Ha! You sound like me! I struggle with gadgety shit so much and even doors (I always end up coming across some weird door I can’t open and look like an utter dork!). In fact, today I could get the petrol pump to work and stood there panicking (because who wants to admit that?!) before it eventually kicked in. Doh.
Yep – me and gadgety stuff don’t always go well together!! That shower/bath scenario nearly beat me!! lol
Hahahaha! I’ve done that with the lights before, and the bath! The image of you trying to bathe under the bath tap though! lol
So glad I’m not the only dork around! lol All I can say is thank God no-one could see me (with regards to bathing from the bath tap)!! 😉
At least is was all confined to the privacy of your hotel room!
Yes – thank God!! 🙂 (though there were other dorky moments when out and about at the event)
Haha… that reminds me of going to fancy bars and restaurants with swish handwashing facilities where you have no idea how to turn them on and just wave your hands underneath hoping for magic to happen.
Yes – so true Zoe! So many times I have stood not knowing how to turn on taps to wash my hands at fancy places! I remember one place I was at, it turned out you had to bang something with your knee to get the taps to turn on. Only found out from watching someone else doing it!! 😉
I did the exact same thing with the lights. And I’ve traveled enough to know better lol.
So glad I was not alone with that one! lol
Hilarious! We’ve all been there xx
Oh that is comforting to hear Shannon! 🙂 xo
I look forward to reading more of your posts about ProBlogger!
Thanks Ingrid! There’s so much to process and heaps to share! 🙂
LOL! It was so fun to meet you – I feel like I need an action replay! PS I thought your hair was ace!
Sammie – I was so excited to meet you that I think I was struck senseless! Huge FODP! No disappointment meeting you at all – you’re just as lovely as I imagined! I need an action replay too – it’s like I was outside my body watching it all happen – weird! Thanks for saying my hair was ace! lol 🙂
Heeee! I couldn’t work out how to use the hand dryer in the loo with twelve people lined up watching me helplessly waving my hands all around the freakin thing! In the end I just said, “Oh well, I’ll go old school!’ and walked out wiping my hands on my butt. You can’t take the bogan out of a North Queenslander!
Oh I know that hand dryer!! I struck it lucky with it – waved my hands around like a lunatic and struck gold! Had it not worked out, I’d have been wiping my hands on my butt also! haha 😉
Ba ha ha – sorry to laugh at your expense but it’s just too funny. 🙂 Was so lovely to meet you, you are just as lovely in person. xx
Laugh away Malinda – I laugh at myself anyway hehe – biggest dork ever! I must get out more! Oh thank you so much for saying I was just as lovely in person. That’s the first time I’ve heard that and it is so nice to hear considering my FODP (fear of disappointing people)! It was such a pleasure to meet you. I knew you’d be lovely but you were even more fabulous than I had imagined! 🙂 xo
That’s so funny! I can remember being bamboozled the first time I encountered the bath shower combo. The thought of you trying to shower under the bath tap did make me laugh out loud! I’m glad you GHD is still working!
It was pretty ridiculous trying to bathe by splashing water out of the bath tap over myself whilst a few swear words escaped due to frustration! Yep the vision of it makes me LOL too! haha I’m glad my GHD is still working too though if it wants to die now I’m home again it can because it’s starting to look a bit rough around the edges and a new swankier one would be welcome though I can’t really afford it so maybe it should wait till near to Christmas time! 🙂
Ha, ha. You big dork. I’ve had some funny moments in foreign hotel rooms (Chinese, Japanese) where things really are a little different (and you can’t read the instructions). The look on Little Yang’s face when the toilet that also worked as a bidet starting flushing his little bottom in our Tokyo hotel room was priceless.
Hehe – yep I’m a big dork who needs to get out more! Oh my gosh – I need to master Australian gadgets before I’m set loose on Japanese or Chinese gadgets. Imagine!! Ahh little Yang’s face would have been so cute! Lovely to meet you at long last! 🙂
LOL yes I’ve been stumped by a shower like that before. We came across some v interesting showers in Europe – luckily I had the hubster to work them out or I may not have been able to wash most of the trip! So glad to hear you enjoyed it (I knew you would) and looking forward to reading more from you xxx
Oh that is comforting to hear Janet. So we’re both big dorks! Yes I bet you came across some interesting showers in Europe. You’d be a master at them by now! Yes I did enjoy Problogger – very much! It was a bit overwhelming at times but i surprised myself at how well I coped! 700+ people, lots of noise, seeing people who are celebrities (to me anyway) in the blogging world, meeting people who I had only previously ever known online. It’s all pretty confronting stuff and way out of my comfort zone but i did it and I proud that I faced the fear and did it anyway! 🙂 xo
Haha…well, I wasn’t at ProBlogger, but I have done stuff like this several times and dorky stuff at work. It’s like my brain has left me for a while.
Looking forward to reading your thoughts on ProBlogger
Glad to hear Sanch! lol That shower had me so bamboozled but now I know how to work it I wonder why it took me so long to work it out! 🙂
hahaha….
Trust me, I have travelled a fair bit lately as you know and it does seem to be a constant battle to work out the showers!! Some times if you do both simultaneously (pull the knob and turn the tap handle at the same time) you can avoid the water transferring as it’ll come straight out of the shower head!
So looking forward to reading all the post ProBlogger posts and hearing what you all learnt!
Ahhh I tried the simultaneous thingy and it didn’t work. Water had to be gushing into the bath before I pulled that silver knob and then got water blasted in my face from the shower! I’m sure you’ve come across some hilarious shower set ups in your travels! There is more to come from me on Problogger – the next post should be far more intelligent than this one! lol
Bahahaha Min!!! I probably would’ve done the same thing with the shower but we had one without a bath 🙁 Next year we want one with a bath – thats the whole point of getting away from kids right? So we could have an actual bath not a 3 second shower.
That shower had me stumped for so long!! I didn’t have any desire for a bath. I can have a bath any time I want to at home! I guess the difference is that my kids are all grown up so I can do these things again now! 😉
Bahahaha… What a grea twist to problogger
That’s a good way of putting it! lol
Lucky I had Nathan with me because he worked out the putting the room key into the light switch trick!!! We didn’t have a bath but I have had those issues in hotel rooms before – sometimes you know what to do but they still don’t want to play the game!
Even my hubby would have been stumped by the shower scenario! I think there should have been instructions provided on how to work that shower to be honest! At least I’ve learnt a new trick! 🙂
Thanks for putting a smile on my face Min. I’ve done the first two but worse for the shower I rang reception and got them to come up and show me. Then I told them I was from the country and still used a bucket on the verandah.
I wasn’t far off phoning reception Patrick! I was going to finish washing myself from the *bath tap* and then p hone for an explanation on how the shower works and suggest perhaps it would be wise to include instructions on how to operate the shower in the room somewhere! It was just by some lucky accident that I finally worked out how to get the water to come out of that shower head! 😉 lol (still laughing over the bucket on the verandah comment!)
